2STiC: Security, stability and transparency of inter-network communications

AMS-IX, NLnet Labs, SIDN Labs, SURFnet, TU Delft, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Twente work together in the joint research programme called 2STiC (pronounced "to-stick"), which is short for Security, Stability and Transparency in inter-network Communication.

2STiC's goal is to develop and evaluate mechanisms for increasing the security, stability and transparency of internet communications, by experimenting with and contributing to emerging internet architectures, such as SCION, RINA, and NDN, as well as the existing (IP-based) Internet. The 2STiC partners envisage that such new types of internet will complement and co-exist with the current Internet, serving specific application types.

We have written a joint blog in which we discuss our project in more detail, for instance in terms of goals, motivation, timeliness and research topics.

Communicatie netwerken worden als een gegeven (utility) beschouwd, maar ook het Internet maakt evolutie/veranderingen door. Ook kraakt het wel eens in het Internet. En dus is het wijs om stil te staan bij het toekomstige internet.

Energie netwerken maken een soortgelijke (of net uit fase) golf-ontwikkeling mee als communicatie netwerken:

• lokele fout heeft globale gevolgen (US energie grid stort in==BGP hijacks);
• dezelfde leverancier voor onderliggende systems (EEn leverancier voor wind modelen==beperkte leveranciers voor comm. netwerk apparatuur),
• stoppen van trading (energy companies stop trading==beheer/onderhoud [IoT] appartuur gestopt);
• minder grote gecentraliseerde netwerken nodig (meer regionale energie opwerking<>reductie van verkeer in doelgroep comm. networks);
• (de)centralisatatie (meerdere kleine energy cooperaties<>meer grote social media bedrijven);
• resilience van network (energie==communicatie);
• governance/protocollen (hoe laat je energie prosumers samen werken==hoe lever je de benodigde flexibile inter domain comm. services);
• verschillende domeinen/hierarchieen (hoog/midden/laag spanningsnetwerken/cooperaties/huizen==IX/WAN/MAN/LAN/IoT)
• prosumers (energie==communicatie)
